Overview

A stunning building, a fascinating history and a dramatic story of reinvention. Get the lowdown on Gorton Monastery with this guided tour by Jonathan Schofield Tours.

Edward Pugin was in the Premier League of Victorian Neo-Gothic architects. It was his birthright, in a way. AWN Pugin, his father, had been the chief promoter of 'correct' Gothic, and was the designer of the interiors of the Houses of Parliament.

Edward was commissioned to design the church and friary on Gorton Lane by the Franciscans in 1863. Built with the help of the brothers themselves, its imposing central tower, soaring pitched roofs and intricate stone façade became true testaments to the artistry of the Gothic Revival.

The Franciscans left the site in 1989, and a failed attempt by a developer to convert the buildings into apartments was followed by years of appalling neglect. Finally in 1996 Gorton Monastery was handed over to the care of the Monastery of St Francis and Gorton Trust, led by the indefatigable Elaine Griffiths and her husband Paul.

Major grants from various agencies funded the Grade II Monastery’s £6.5 million restoration, leading to its present role as a beacon in Gorton, a community resource, a visitor attraction and a superb events venue.

This stunning Neo-Gothic building really does deserve to be explored, as does its tale of inspiration, determination, love and community.
